The coins were\u003cbr\u003e\npresented to the public in the Lithuanian Art Museum, Vilnius.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe event started with a minute of silence which was observed in memory\u003cbr\u003e\nof the late President Algirdas Brazauskas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe Chairman of the Bank of Lithuania Reinoldijus Sarkinas said:\u003cbr\u003e\n“Since school, in Lithuania we all know that the Battle of\u003cbr\u003e\nGrunwald - which took place on 15 July 1410 when Polish and Lithuanian\u003cbr\u003e\ntroops defeated the Order - is a special moment in our history that\u003cbr\u003e\ndetermined the development not just of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and\u003cbr\u003e\nthe statehood of Lithuania as a whole but also the predestination of\u003cbr\u003e\nneighbouring and Eastern European countries in the 15th century and\u003cbr\u003e\nlater.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eRecognising the importance of this event, the Bank of\u003cbr\u003e\nLithuania’s respond was inventive: for the first time we\u003cbr\u003e\nissued three coins at one time - they are of three different metals and\u003cbr\u003e\ndenominations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eDesigner of the coins Rytas Jonas Belevicius depicted moments of the\u003cbr\u003e\nBattle of Grunwald on one side of the coins.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe reverses of gold and silver coins illustrate horsemen and\u003cbr\u003e\ninfantrymen reflecting pictures from mediaeval books. The fight is\u003cbr\u003e\ndepicted somewhat theatrically and the size of figures is dispensed\u003cbr\u003e\naccording to their weight in the composition and a hierarchy of that\u003cbr\u003e\ntime. Details of closing, armour and weaponry characteristic of the\u003cbr\u003e\ntime were conveyed as precisely as possible.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eAccording to the designer,\u003cbr\u003e\ndecorative arrangement of spears on the reverse of 1 litas coin\u003cbr\u003e\nslightly reminds of the course of the Battle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe other sides of the coins depict a stylised Vytis or seals of the\u003cbr\u003e\nthen ruler of the state. As Dr. Rimvydas Petrauskas says in his\u003cbr\u003e\nextensive historic review in the leaflet published by the Bank of\u003cbr\u003e\nLithuania: ”Finally, the Battle of Grunwald is the historical\u003cbr\u003e\nsymbol of Lithuania’s political sovereignty; it is reflected\u003cbr\u003e\nin Grand Duke Vytautas’ majestic seal created just a few\u003cbr\u003e\nyears before the Battle depicted on the collectors coin.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe edges of gold and silver coins bear stylised 15th century\u003cbr\u003e\nspearheads and the edge of 1 litas coin is rimmed at intervals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eGold and silver coins dedicated to the 600th anniversary of the Battle\u003cbr\u003e\nof Grunwald are already 63rd and 64th collectors (commemorative) coins\u003cbr\u003e\nby subject and image issued by the Bank of Lithuania after the\u003cbr\u003e\nrestoration of independence.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eMoreover, six 1 litas circulation coins\u003cbr\u003e\nhave been issued that are of the same or similar design as collectors\u003cbr\u003e\n(commemorative) coins the latest coin of which is dedicated to the\u003cbr\u003e\nanniversary of the Battle of Grunwald.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe coins were minted at the Lithuanian Mint.
