Vienna was no exception. There\u003cbr\u003e\nwhere no street lights, just an occasional torch or oil lantern. The\u003cbr\u003e\nmaze of streets made with cobbles meandered through the town - so sure footing was never really solid.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eTrash and sanitation was simply dumped into the streets. Adding to\u003cbr\u003e\nthese dangers were the large number of deaths, plague victims who\u003cbr\u003e\ndropped dead in the streets.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eEvery day the morticians would collect the corpses. There was no time\u003cbr\u003e\nto bury them individually but rather they were collected and buried in\u003cbr\u003e\nlarge pits. Once these pits filled up they were covered with lime and\u003cbr\u003e\nearth.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eLate one evening Augustin was on his way home after a long day of work\u003cbr\u003e\nand having imbibed a bit too much. The dark and dreary streets were a\u003cbr\u003e\ntricky maze to try and navigate home even under normal conditions.\u003cbr\u003e\nAugustin was exhausted and so he laid down at the edge of a street to\u003cbr\u003e\nget some sleep.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eHe was so soundly asleep that unbeknownst to him he was picked up by\u003cbr\u003e\nthe morticians and tossed onto the cart of plague victims. Luckily\u003cbr\u003e\nAugustine woke up in a pit filled with bodies just prior to the pit\u003cbr\u003e\nbeing covered over with earth.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe morticians were more than surprised. But Augustine’s luck\u003cbr\u003e\nhad certainly changed. In no time, the rumour spread far and wide that\u003cbr\u003e\nwine was an excellent preventative medicine for the plague.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eAugustine who was so grateful for his second chance decided to help out\u003cbr\u003e\nduring these difficult times and assist in the clean up and the\u003cbr\u003e\ncollecting of many bodies.
